If my opponent in a political campaign finds out about my bankruptcy, can they use that? I am running for a local position. I changed parties right before filing. I heard that the opposition has learned of my Chapter 7 five years ago.
Can they use it? Will it be effective for them?
The position I'm running for makes decisions (with two other elected persons) about millions of dollars, as well as an annual budget.
I have been critical of the budget process and of the handling of money on the part of the other two incumbents.

Since bk is public record I see no reason why your opponent can't mention it. Why don't you mention it 1st thus deadening the impact by putting your own spin on the subject?

YES! Use your fear and tell your constituents that you KNOW personally how not using the Public money correctly, that bankruptcy could be possible since you have personal experience with bk and have learned how to live within your means, and that the local government must learn the lesson you have.

Spin it for your own use. Get the draw on your opponent.

Use it to talk about how the economy is poor, that State governments are going bankrupt and how your personal bankruptcy story personalizes all this for you.
